Recently we have launched a new project Creating SMILES – building the nation. Creating SMILES – building the nation is all about Science, Engineering, Technology, Humanity and Prosperity. It is a rural based project managed by Help Himalaya. The main objective of SMILES is to implement a combination of technology and socio-economic interventions that will lead to an enhanced living standard for the people in the rural villages of Nepal. Today, most of the villages lack electricity. Our first action is to electrify these villages using micro-hydro and solar power. This will decrease the use of fire-woods for cooking, kerosene lamps will no longer be used for studying and working in the evening and thus it will prevent the eye problems many people suffer from today. Besides lighting up the villages, it will help us in the installation of wireless communication technologies which will connect voices from these rural villages to the mainstream communication nexus by the use of internet and VoIP. Communication tools and electrification will lead to opportunities for improved education systems through computerization, better health services by the use of telemedicine where there are no doctors and possibilities for community entrepreneurship. Education will Increase awareness of proper sanitation and healthy habits. Computerization and internet together will lead to the use of e-commerce to sell local products in the villages. Education and participation of the villagers will empower us by time to start other income generating projects. SMILES is thus an integrated project, targeted to bring significant changes in the socio-economic and health status of the poor people living in the rural and hilly areas of Nepal.
